Letter of Introduction (posted January 20)

Im not really a fan of writing essays and reading so Im hoping that taking this class will help me prepare my writing skills for college. So I guess Ill talk about things Im interested in now; I really enjoy cheerleading. I strarted doing it my sophomore year and I liked it so Idecided to keep at it. Im actually hoping to go on with cheerleading through college at Iowa State. I think it would be fun. I also love running. I did track for about 7 years with Excalibur Track Club and I ran for Roosevelts team. But after all those years of competing in track my love for running kind of dwendlled away and now I rarely run. Im enjoying high school, but I cannot wait to get out and live on my own. So theres a few fun facts about me!

Personal Reflection on Topic of Inquiry(posted January 27 -- Peer Response January 29)

I used to be a very motivated person, but ive noticed that throughout my high school career my motivation has kind of 'lost its fire'. Although Im not vvery motivated with my school work anymore, i still find motivation to be present within my everyday life in many other things. Such as art, cheerleading, and getting things done. Im big on having everyday be a productive day and to have a productive day, you need to be motivated to do so. Motivation is in even the simplest things we do each day, like eating. Your mind and body find the motivation to get your hungry stomach food. Think about it, what have you done today? You had to have motivation to do all those things you accomplished.

Rough Draft Definition (posted February 3 -- Peer Response February 5)

Motivation

What makes you want to do somesthing? Everyday in our lives we make decisions whether they be big or small, or tough ones or easy ones. We've encountered motivation since our childhood; whether it be getting rewarded for sharing a toy or getting candy or money for getting good grades. Motivation exceeds one’s childhood and is used throughout an individual’s entire life. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that motivation is necessary to complete any given task. You yourself have to want to do it, and that is what motivation is. Even the smallest of tasks such as eating require motivation. If you lacked motivation, you wouldn't have the incentive to do anything. Without motivation, it is safe to say, ones life would have very little order to it.
Wikipidia defined moitivation as , "[The] activation or energization of goal oriented behavior, usen internally or externally and may be rooted in the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure." To me, motivation is what enthuses you to want to do something that you may or may not want to do. If someone were to ask me what motivates me, my response woul dmost likely be, 'to make other people happy.' I would consider myself a people pleaser and seeing others happy because of me makes me want to do things for others. On the other hand, there are situations like eating, which you have to motivate yourself to do. In that case, my motivation would probably be my will to live. I want to live, and to live, you have to eat; so that would be my motivation for eating. Motivation plays a role in our everyday, small tasks.
Each and every person is different from eachother, and all find different ways to motivate themselves. My dad is a coach for Excaliburs Track Club, and I asked him about what he thinks motivation is. He said, "Motivation is a persons ability to take action." There are many ways to define motivation, but I like my dads defienition. It sums up that as a whole, motivation is a person finding a way to do a task. motivation is obtaining goals.

Motivation

When youre sitting at home on the couch, and your stomach growls telling you its hungry, do you sit there and starve or do you get up and find some food for yourself? Everdyday in our lives, we make decision. Whether they be big or small, tough or easy, or even meaningful or not. We've grown up with motivation playing a large role in our childhoods aslo. At the precious times of potty training, getting an A on a test at school, or sharing with your sibling. We all were rewarded in some way for things we did as children to show us right from wrong and to make us want to do the right thing. Motivation exceeds ones childhood and is carried on throughout an individuals entire life. It wouldnt be an exaggeation to say that motivation is necessary to complete any given task. You yourself have to want to do it for it to be done. Even the smallest of tasks such as eating, like I said previously, require motivation. If you lacked motivation, you wouldnt have the incentive to do anything. Without motivation, it is safe to say that ones life would have very little order to it.

Wikipidia defines motivation as, "[The] activation or energization of goal oriented behavior, used internally or externally, and may be rooted in the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure." Going into deapth on the definition Wikipidia made, motivation can be internal or external. Internal motivation would be self-motivation. A person finds self motivation within themselves to reach and obtain a goal. External motivation would be someone or something else doing the motivating for you. Also, going back to what I said earlier about eating requiring motivation, Wikipidias definition says, "[Motivation] is the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure." When youre hungry, you are not comfortable. Your body needs food to fuel itself and your stomach sends messages to your brain telling it to 'feed me!' So you get up and go get some food.

I would consider myself to be a people pleaser. I have been told often by others that I am one too. Seeing other people happy, in turn, makes me happy. That is my motivation to do things when it involves others. If soemone were to ask me what motivates me, I would tell them that, motivation to me, is what enthuses you to want to do something that you may or may not want to do. Using my eating example again, I would say that when Im hungry, my motivation to get up and get food, is my will to live. I want to live, and to live, you have to eat!

My Dad is a coach on Excaliburs Track Club and when asking him what he would define motivation as, he said, "Motivation is a persons ability to take action." I'd say that my Dad sumed up motivation thoroughly with a few words. Every person is motivated in their own way, which means that it would take different things to motivate certain people. My Dad, being a coach of hundreds of different kinds of kids, would know motivation well and know how you have to take different approaches of motivation with different individuals. No one person is the same.

Although there are many different kinds of motivation, they all meet on the same terms with eachother in that they all stive to obtain a certain goal. Whatever that goal may be, big or small, one wants to accomplish it. That is where motivation comes into play. The idea that your mind knows you want something and knows what it needs to do to get what it wants. That is motivation, finding the strength to take action and get what you want.

Wikipedia defines motivation as, “[The] activation or energization of goal oriented behavior, used internally or externally, and may be rooted in the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure.” Going into depth on the definition Wikipedia has made, motivation can be internal or external. An example of internal motivation would be self-motivation. A person finds self-motivation within themselves to reach and obtain a goal they have set. External motivation would be someone or something else doing the motivating for you. Also, going back to my example made earlier of eating requiring motivation, Wikipedia’s definition said, “[M]otivation is the basic need to minimize physical pain and maximize pleasure.” When you’re hungry, you are not comfortable. Your body needs food to fuel itself so your stomach sends messages to your brain telling it to ‘Feed me!’ So you get up and get yourself some food.

Reflection #1 (posted February 20 -- Peer Response February 22)

The purpose of my writing was to show what motivation meant to me. I wrote this essay with sports and school in mind, the two places that I feel it plays a big role in my life. My audience was everyone who is interested to see what my opinion on motivation is. I wrot this from the standpoint of a teenager so fellow classmates and or teamates would know where I was coming from. My exigence to write on this specific topic was becauseI personally struggle with motivation and I felt like writing about it would help me strengthen my motivation to do things. The tone that I used was opinionated and factual. I showed my audiance what I thought the defintion of motivation was and I also showed them what others thought it was.

Rough Draft Comparison (postedFebruary 24 -- Peer Response February 26 )

Self-Motivation in School vs. Self-Motivation in Sports

Although there are several different variations of motivation, I decided to focus on self-motivation becasue I feel its the most prominant of the types in my life. Within self-motivation, I am going to focus on motivation in sports and in school and how the two different locations vary from eachother. Self-motivation can make or break you, whether it be in school or in sports. I feel that self-motivation is more important in school though. If you dont have good grades in your classes, then you arent allowed to participate in the sports youre in. It takes an imense amount of motivation to succeed in school, and sometimes, its hard to find that motivation. I personally struggle with finding that motivation at times. Without self-motivation, you have nothing.

In school, everyone has their own ways of motivating themselves. Whethere it be gettting good grades for colleges, not getting grounded, or even the pride of doing well in school. Being motivated in school leads to many beneficial things in life like a good job when you get out of high school and being able to participate in sports while having a good time doing what you like and being with your friends.

In sports, self-motivation is how an athlete improves, has a higher performance level, achieves goals, and others things. self-motivation is very prominant in sports, but without motivation in school to get good grades, you cant participate in sports. Though school at least. You always have to be wanting yourself to do better and be able to push yourself to actually get better. Self-motivation in sports is the ability to take action.

Revision Comparison (posted March 2 -- Peer Response March 4)

Although there are many different types of motivation, I feel the two most important are self-motivation within the school and self-motivation within sports. The two are similar too eachother yet, contrast eachother in a few ways. Some people struggle finding self-motivation though, I have that problem sometimes. People also have different ways of getting themselves motivated, in school and in sports. doing well in school effects whether or not you can participate in sports. That situation can be a motivation for athletes to do well in school. Self motivation can make or break you when it ocmes to both school and sports.
Self motivation is presetn everyday in our lives. When youre hungry and want to get something to eat, you make yourself get up and find some food. You motivated yourself to feed yourself because you need food to live and you doint want to die. in sschool, you have to motivate yourself to do the homework and to study so you can get a good grade. Peoples motivation in school might be that they want good grades and good scores on their tests so they cangetinto a good college. Others may be that they want to have pride in their success in school.
In sports, selft motivation is the ability of the athlete to take action and make themselves achieves their goals and to imporve themselves. Other people cant improve your athletic ability for you, you have to want to do it yourself and that is the only way to accomplish it. Just like in school, athletes take pride in acomplishing their goals, which they achieved with self motivation. The desire to want to achieve goals and become better is also a variety of motivation.
These two ares where self motivation is most prominent in myy perosnal life, as well as a few of my collegues at school. Motivation in school and in sports both take believing in yourself, setting goals for what you want to achive, and taking action. However, they have different ideas in mind of what is wanted to be achieved. These two ares of self motivation are very similar yet, at the same time different from eachother in many ways. Self motivation follows you where ever you go in your day, with whatever you may be doing.

My incentive when writing this essay was to show how the two different areas of self motivation in school and in sports can vary from eachother. Even though they are two different kinds of motivation, they still have similarities. I was aiming my essay towards high school students who are involved in both school and sports. The tone I used was factual and I used evidence to support the claims I made.

Revision Argument (posted April 13 -- Peer Response April 15)

When it comes to school work, not many people jump for joy. The majority of students like to wait till the night before and stay up late dishing out what they can before the assignment is due the next day. That is procrastination. Some may argue that procrastination has no benefits what so ever towards one s work. While others might say that one gets better results from procrastination. This argument could go either way, but in the end, I agree that there are no benefits from procrastination.

Being a procrastinator myself, I can say first hand that one will get better end results by giving themselves more time. Cramming an entire project in a few hours at night after a long day is not good for anyone. Ones work wont be as good as if they had done the project in a timely fashion. Which is the way to do it.

The people who argue that procrastination is a beneficial stragety may say that procrastination reveals ones true work. Without all the editing that may cause doubt in the student and end up with not-so-good work.

Whether one is for procrastination or against it, I guarentee that every student has procrastinated on an assignment at least once in their school career.

Argument on Procrastination

When it comes to school work, not many people jump for joy. The majority of students like to wait till the night before and stay up late dishing out what they can before the assignment is due the next day. That is my definition of procrastination. Dictionary.com defines procrastination as, "to put off or defer an action until a later time; delay." Some may argue that procrastination has no benefits what so ever towards one's work. While others might say that one gets better results from procrastinating and putting themself under pressure. This argument could go either way, but in the end I agree that there are no benefits from procrastination in one's schoolwork.
Being a procrastinator myself, I can say first hand that one will receive better end results by giving themselves more time. Cramming an entire project in a few hours at night after a long day is not good for anyone. Ones work will not be as congenial as if they had done the project in a timely fashion, which in my opinion is the way to do it. When given a timed schedule, a person’s work is better edited and has more time spent on it.
The people who argue that procrastination is a beneficial strategy may say that procrastination reveals ones true work. Without all the editing that may cause doubt in the student and end up with unsatisfactory work. People who are pro-procrastination feel that when they are under pressure they do the best work. They like to keep themselves on a tight schedule where they always have to be doing something to keep them busy.
Overall, procrastination does not benefit students when it comes to their grades and assignments. Whether one is for procrastination or against it, I guarantee that every student has procrastinated on an assignment at least once in their school career. And in my case, more than once.
